Back to school time is unfortunately coming up very soon! There may even be some of you reading this post who have already gone back to school! But no need to fear, I am here to help! I will be doing quite a few back to school posts within the next few weeks until I go back to school in the end of August/Early September! I know that most of my blog readers are from the UK and have very different schooling systems. The high-school in the UK from my understanding is at a completely different age than here! Here we have high school from the ages of 14-18 years old, and it is four years long. I am going into my junior (third) year of high school so I thought I would give those incoming freshmen (first years) some advice on how to go about your first few weeks at high school, until you get into the swing of things.
Disclaimer: These things are all based on my experiences, so they don't apply for everyone, and in every school!
Tip #1: BE YOURSELF
I know, I know so cheesy right? But it is so true! Honestly for some reason freshman year was the year that I just stopped caring what people thought of me! I had been wanting to for a while, but it was much easier said than done! I don't know how to describe how amazing my life has been and how happy I have been! You just really have to dedicate yourself to not caring, and eventually that stress you get when you actually be yourself, and are afraid of what others will think, will just disappear! So please just do this, you will meet people that truly love you for you, and your life will be much more amazing, and happier! I might be doing a whole post on this so look out for it!
Tip #2: Start a new club/activity
This will be amazing for you! You can/and will meet people who enjoy the same things as you, and you can make so many new friends that you share something in common with you! You can get a whole new group of friends if you want! And try to initiate hanging out in a big giant group together outside of school in order to progress your friendships!
Tip #3: Don't be afraid to talk to people who aren't in your grade!
Let me tell you, I had classes freshmen year with sophomores, and even one with juniors and seniors. By the end of the year I became friends with a bunch of them! Now actually currently, because of something I do after school like 99% of my friends are either 1 or 2 years older than me or 1 or 2 years younger than me! I know now that I am no longer a freshmen that I don't care if younger people talk to me! I have a bunch of friends that are younger than me, and I love them just the same! 1 to 4/5 years isn't that big or that much of a difference in age!
Tip #4: Everyone is in the same situation as you
If you are nervous, or anxious, especially if your school brings in new people during high school, don't worry everyone else is going through the same thing as you, and is probably just as nervous for this as you are!
Tip #5: GET A FLIPPING PLANNER ALREADY
You've debated it, I know you have! Just do it already! Your life will change for the better, and you will be so much more organized I promise! And plus, at my highschool they don't provide a planner for you like they did in middle school except freshmen year, but you don't know that your school will do that!
Tip #6: Actually try with your schoolwork
It's not true that freshmen year doesn't count! It does ALOT! This is when your GPA and your Class Rank starts, and you don't want to start off your high school career with a bad GPA or Class Rank! Trust me when you try hard, it will pay off, and eventually you will get used to it, and get into the habit of it! Plus if you try hard you might be able to start taking classes that suit your interests earlier than most others like I have!
Tip #7: Don't take this newfound freedom for granted
Don't use the fact that you are allowed to use your phones at school for an excuse to text during class or not pay attention in class! This is ridiculous! Just please use the freedom to help you progress your life, and don't take it for granted!
Tip #8: Respect others and what they like!
You want to be able to be yourself, so why don't you accept others for what they like to do! Even if you say nothing to them or to their face, you still shouldn't judge them! Also don't be sarcastically mean to people, THAT IS JUST AWEFUL TOO!
Tip #9: DON'T BE THAT KID THAT DOESN'T USE YOUR LOCKER BECAUSE YOUR BACK WILL ACTUALLY BREAK DOWN
Sorry that was a little heated..... but please just use your locker so you don't have to carry everything! It is not that big of a deal!
Tip #10: Make things fun by inviting a friend to move into your locker with you!
I share my locker with my friend and it is so much fun! We get to see eachother more often because we don't have classes together ,and you can decorate your locker together if you want! We have ours filled with inside jokes!
Tip: If you do this get a locker shelf so you don't accidentally bring their history notebook to calculus (I speak from experience *shudders*)
Tip #11: HAVE SOME FUN (SAFE FUN)
Don't forget to have fun! Hang out with friends, go to school activities, football games, etc. Just be safe and responsible! The time goes by quick (I feel like I have been in high school 7 weeks not 3 years!)!
