Valentine's day. When we think of Valentine's Day we think of love, roses, and maybe even chocolates. However, do we know what Valentine's Day is actually about?
Valentine's day is actually Saint Valentine's day. In the Catholic tradition Saints have a day (or even a few days) in which their 'feast' is celebrated. Saint Valentine's feast is celebrated on what we know as Valentine's Day, and it is actually the anniversary of the day in which he was beheaded. So why do we associate love with the day a legitimate Saint was beheaded, I shall tell you.
Saint Valentine was a Catholic priest in a time period in which intense Christian persecution was underway. Not to mention that young marriage was pretty much prohibited since it took away from the population that would join the military and fight for the country. However, Saint Valentine would secretly marry young couples who were in love because he knew that the love the couples had a gift from God, and that was their love. Marriage is a blessing from God and to take away the right for a young couple to marry just so that they could go to war is wrong. Saint Valentine was eventually incarcerated as well, and then eventually beheaded by orders the emperor at the time. However, even after he was incarcerated he continued to marry young couples.
Therefore, we celebrate the day of the death of the martyr, Saint Valentine, because he represented the love for the love that God has blessed some people with. He fought for love because he knew how important it was for society and for the glory of God. This Saint is amazing, and this Valentine's Day think about him and his devotion to God while amidst all of the roses and the chocolates. God is the center of it all, so make sure to keep Him at the center of it all in your heart, mind, soul, and strength.
